Honourable Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, Honourable Eezchiel Joseph, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and Co-operatives, and Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), H.E. Douglas Shen presided over the ceremony.
Ambassador Shen noted in his remarks that he is pleased to learn the project has made Saint Lucia the leading aquaculture country in Eastern Caribbean region; the full package of relevant technology has been provided to the Department of Fisheries, the project is now ready to be transfered to Saint Lucia for future sustainable operation. Ambassador Shen added that Taiwan government also agreed to sponsor extra 50 thousand EC for the short term operation of the aquaculture facility to ensure the project will be transferred smoothly.
Hon. Ezechiel Joseph who received the facility on behalf of Saint Lucia welcomed the fruitful achievements Taiwan has made on the local aquaculture industry. He added that the decision taken by his administration back in 2007 to pursue the project was well thought of and has significantly improved the livelihoods of Saint Lucia farmers.
Hon. Prime Minister Allan Chastanet was on hand to witness the handing over of the facility. He also added his voice in giving thanks to the government of Taiwan in providing the much needed technical and financial assistance to the local economy.
The handing over ceremony of the Union Aquaculture facility was the first public function undertaken by the new Taiwanese Ambassador, H.E. Douglas Shen. He reminded the gathering of his government’s continued commitment to work with the government and people of Saint Lucia in the development of the local agricultural sector.
